Memorial Weekend Brings Folks to Indiana

The Memorial Day weekend has equaled automobile racing in Indiana since 1911. Fans and partyers from around the world show up for “the greatest spectacle in racing.” For some, the thrill of being in Indiana for the fun, the excitement, the race and the other spectators is a once-in-a-lifetime event. For others, the race is a tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation.

The racers who make the trip to Indiana every spring also come from all over the world. The 2016 champion is Alexander Rossi, an American born in California. The United States has been home to many of the champions, but nine other countries have produced Indy race winners. Drivers from the United Kingdom have won the race eight times, and drivers from Brazil have been Indy champions seven times. The international status of the drivers is reflected in the diversity of the fans in the stands.

On the other hand, the race also draws viewers from as close as Speedway, the Indianapolis suburb which is home to the famous raceway. Others arrive from states bordering Indiana, like Michigan and Ohio that have traditionally been supportive of the automobile industry. Others travel from far-away states like California. The visual thrills and sounds of cars and drivers testing the limits of endurance is sure to continue drawing a global audience for years to come.
