Ohio Company Wants To Hire 100 New Workers In Indiana

The job openings just keep coming in the state of Indiana. A food processing company based in Ohio just announced plans to hire an additional 100 workers in the eastern Indiana city of Cambridge City. SugarCreek Packing Company of Washington Court House, Ohio, says it hopes to have the new hires in place by June of 2019.

The unemployment rate of Indiana is already among the lowest in the nation at 3.4%. The national unemployment rate is 4.1% Part of the reason jobs are growing here is the Indiana state legislature’s willingness to give generous tax incentives for businesses that are already here or want to relocate to Indiana.

SugarCreek is hoping to take advantage of that generosity. It is seeking a tax abatement on $7.1 million in new equipment for the Cambridge City operation. Company officials said the new equipment would make the plant more efficient by reducing bottle necks and increasing production.

SugarCreek is a food processor that handles pork, turkey, bacon, flatbread pizza, deli spirals, bacon bits, meatballs, empanadas and more. It cranks out about 36 million pounds of fully cooked and processed products each year. The company wants to ramp up to 54 million pounds annually.

The company has recently made a move to increase its handling of what is called “sous vide protein” which are meats that are first vacuum packed and then cooked.

The plant in Cambridge City, which is about 50 miles east of Indianapolis, currently employs 400 people. That number will likely exceed 500 by mid-2019.
