Shiva Gopal Vasishta Playing a Key Role in Advancing Neurology Treatment

Stem-cell transplants could be the breakthrough to treating multiple sclerosis. This is according to an NIH study called HALT-MS. The study reveals that the stem cell transplants in the blood cells of a person yield long-term remission of the MS symptoms. The one-time treatment is known as High-dose immunosuppressive therapy, or autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (HDIT/HCT). The results showed that 69% of the participants reported no fresh brain lesions, relapse, or symptoms progression after five years. This intervention works well as compared to the MS drugs that are the commonly used for treatment.

The study looked at the treatment in 24 clinical subjects that ranged from 26 to 52 years. They got worse despite using MS. The fact that 70% were helped may be the primary option for those who did not get better with other treatments.
