Following the surprise release of Eminem’s new album Kamikaze, radio personality Charlamagne tha God has responded to the rapper’s lyrics about him, while also sharing his general opinions about the album.
Eminem first mentions Charlamagne Tha God in the song “The Ringer”, rapping: “Charlamagne gonna hate anyway, doesn’t matter what I say/Give me Donkey of the Day/What a way for 2018 to get underway/But I’m gonna say everything that I wanna say”.
He then refers to the radio host again in the song “Fall”, saying: “One last time for Charlamagne/If my response is late, it’s just how long it takes/To hit my ****king radar, I’m so far away”.
In an interview published a few hours after Kamikaze was released, Charlamagne expressed his joy at being “immortalized on records”, saying that he appreciated what the references, negative or not, said about his level of success.
He also expounded on his opinions of the album, criticizing Eminem for calling fellow rapper Tyler, the Creator a Homophobic Slur on “Fall”, and pointing out that the use of the slur could be read not just as an attack on Tyler, but as an attack on the wider LGBT community. Charlamagne, however, expressed appreciation for the rapper’s denunciations of Donald Trump, praising them as more organic than previous attempts at political commentary. The radio host would end up praising Kamikaze, and declaring Eminem one of hip hop’s finest lyricists.
Charlamagne tha God is the host of nationally syndicated radio show The Breakfast Club, along with DJ Envy and Angela Yee. Eminem’s 2017 album “Revival” was released back in December. The release was a bittersweet experience for the rapper as the album did well, but was also universally panned by both critics and fans. This year the rapper once known as Slim Shady has released a new album, “Kamikaze”, an album no one expected. “Kamikaze” is a response to “Revival”, and calls out many of the critics and artists that put the album down. Among them is New York based radio and television personality Charlamagne Tha God. In fact, Charlamagne is mentioned in two of the album’s tracks. This makes Eminem the second artist behind Chingy to dis Charlamagne in a public manner, a fact the radio host believes is a good sign.
“I am happy to be at a level where rappers say my name on records,” Charlamagne stated in an interview with Esquire, “It is cool to be immortalized in songs.” Charlamagne, who started life as Lenard Larry McKelvey, first became famous manning the second mic for Wendy Williams. Charlamagne’s unconventional rhetoric and up front questioning of artists garnered popularity. Since leaving Wendy Williams in 2008 Charlamagne has hosted many radio and television shows. On a August 31st airing of his popular morning radio show The Breakfast Club, the host quipped that the dis was actually am admonishment of guilt. He claims that Shady knew his 2017 album, which Charlamagne refers to as “whack”, was of poor quality and that “Kamikaze” is making up for it. Charlemagne Tha God hosted his 468 podcasts and recently spoke of his new book: “Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks On Me”. The book shows that radio hosts do not always have it easy and there is a vulnerable side to them as well. Charlemagne Tha God suffers from both post-traumatic stress disorder as well as anxiety. You might think that it is surprising that someone who seems to have the perfect life would be suffering from emotional distress. But Charlamagne did not always enjoy success. In his early days as Lenard McKelvey in South Carolina, he was often in trouble with the law and even spent over a month in jail. However, those negative experiences had an impact on his life and Charlemagne vowed to work hard to get onto the right path.
Once he was released from jail, he went to night school, got a job as a radio intern and the rest is now history. Charlamagne is probably best known as the host of the syndicated IHeart radio program The Breakfast Club.
