UAE Emphasizes Innovation with 3D-Printed Office in Dubai

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently announced a new project that will be headed by the country’s National Innovation Committee. This project, a fully 3D-printed office building, will be built in Dubai’s city center, and is being called “The Museum of the Future”. Design News, a website featuring design and engineering stories, has reported on the new project here. After reading the article, I felt that I had a pretty good understanding of the new project.

This ambitious development project is being organized and run by the UAE’s National Innovation Committee. The chairman of the Committee, H.E Excellency Mohammed Al Gergawi, has a long and successful history in design, business, and politics. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University in the United States with his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Al Gergawi went on to become very involved in UAE politics.

Since then, Al Gergawi has made numerous contributions to politics and development in the UAE. His achievements and contributions range from establishing the Dubai Institute for Human Resource Development to playing a critical role in creating the Dubai Autism Center to chairing the Dubai Smart City committee. Now, one of his most recent achievements is chairing the committee that is leading the 3D-printed office building project. Al Gergawi’s excitement for this project is evident in his press release regarding the project, in which he states “We aim to take advantage of this growth by becoming a global hub for innovation and 3D printing. This is the first step of many more to come.”

The project itself is quite interesting, and will definitely be one worth following as it progresses. A 20-foot tall 3D printer will be used to create everything in a 2,000 square-foot office building, from the walls and floors to the furniture and decorations. A variety of materials will be used in this project, most notably special reinforced concrete, fiber reinforced plastic, and glass fiber reinforced gypsum. One of the most important things to remember about this project is that, compared to a project of similar scale, the Museum of the Future will only need a few weeks of construction, will allow for a 50-80% reduction in labor costs, and will generate 30-60% less wasted material.

The Museum of the Future project will be led by WinSun Global (who have 3D-printed a home and an apartment building in China), who will be joined in the project by the architecture and engineering firms Gensler, Thornton Thomasetti, and Syska Hennessy. H.E Excellency Mohammed Al Gergawi and the National Innovation Committee hope that this project will bring attention to the UAE as a country focused on development. At the very least, it will be an interesting project to watch.

FreedomPop Shuts Down Acquisition Rumors, Expands in U.K.

The mobile phone market is one that constantly evolves based on the needs of the user and the abilities of the provider to adjust their business model in order to accommodate them. With a rise in mobile hotspots and specialized data plans becoming common place it is going to take something truly special to set a company apart from the competition. For a little start up out of L.A. the decision to go for a freemium mobile phone route was the only choice left and it ended up working well. FreedomPop has quickly grown into one of the hottest mobile phone carriers in the United States and now they are growing outward thanks to their inventive solution to customer needs.

FredomPop was founded as a mobile wireless service start up back in 2012. They quickly established themselves as a company worth paying attention to thanks to their innovative business model. Freemium models have become more common place in other industries, such as the world of video games, but they are relatively unheard of in the world of mobile wireless service. So when FreedomPop decided to offer their userbase completely free access to talk, text, and mobile data it got the attention of people instantly. Since then the company has grown to host nearly one million users while their quarterly revenue keeps tracking upward, improving at a rate of 25% per quarter. Now with this success in hand FreedomPop has had to shut down the rumors that they would be taking any of the rumored M&A offers that have slid across their table.

CEO Stephen Stokols told reporters that it would be “premature to sell at this point” and it appears that they will be focusing on an expansion toward the United Kingdom. The U.K. is one of the most competitive mobile phone markets in all of Europe and FreedomPop might have a tough time getting their foot into the door. Fortunately you can’t beat “free” and this is what FreedomPop will rely on as their service continues to grow overseas. Right now customers in the U.K. can sign on for the basic SIM based carrier plan which offers 200 minutes, 200 texts, and 200 MB of mobile data completely free of charge. There are optional upgrades and improved plans available, such as the roaming data plan ‘Jetsetter’, otherwise customers are only on the hook for any overages that they incur. This means that customers pretty much are in charge of setting their own bill.

What FreedomPop is doing sounds both radical and a little revolutionary but it is the natural progression that many mobile carriers are going to take in the future. Data itself has become so cheap that charging customers an arm and a leg is just not a viable solution anymore for telemarketing companies. Now we will see many carriers focus on nationwide hotspots and unlimited data plans as a means to hooking more customers with a more customizable product that appeals to their more specific needs and desires.

An Ominous Fear The Walking Dead TV Spot Arrives

Fear the Walking Dead is coming soon. The spinoff prequel to The Walking Dead arrives in late summer and it should greatly appease the appetite of those sincerely interested in seeing more zombie mayhem on the small screen. In addition to the mayhem, a bit of the backstory to the events in The Walking Dead are going to be revealed.

A new preview teaser has been released and the 30-second sequence is ominously interesting. In the TV spot, a young man tries to warn his mother about the outbreak of the zombie infestation. She ignores him because, after all, the authorities would be right out there in front warning people of such a catastrophe. The young man is then admonished not to spend a lot of time online listening to foolishness.

Ominous music rises up as the video goes to black.

A lot of dark themes are present in this very short clip, as Brian Bonar points out. The hint that you cannot trust the government or the authorities is overarching. The everlasting concept of a generational gap is reflected as well.

Overall, the teaser does its job. Anyone who views the clip is going to be very intrigued about what occurs during the series. Hopefully, the series will deliver a ratings smash for AMC.

Boy, 8, Tolerated Bullying to Grow Hair Long For Donation

Anyone who’s seen daytime talk shows has at some time heard about places that specialize in taking donor hair from people and making them into wigs for people who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment. Children With Hair Loss was created by a woman whose niece was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age 3. The chemotherapy caused the little girl to lose her hair. Today she’s a 28 year cancer survivor, which Sam Tabar respects after hearing about it in the Examiner. Regina Villemure was inspired to create a business that could get replacement hair for children like her niece, Sarah, who had cancer treatment for five years. Children With Hair Loss welcomes anyone who wants to donate their hair cuttings.

Christian McPhilamy was 6 years-old when he decided to start growing his blond hair long to donate it to Children with Hair Loss. It all started when Christian saw an infomercial about St Judes. He let his hair grow for two years before getting it cut. The Floridian youngster spent two years being called a girl by bullies, and he endured strange looks from adults who were not too crazy about a boy wearing his hair down to his waist. Christian maintained a strong attitude in order to grow his hair long enough to donate to some child who lost his hair due to cancer treatment or other reason. Christian’s donation makes 1 in 50 donations that were contributed by boys according to the FreedomPop review posted on CNet.com.

Coffee Makes a Comeback

The health and nutrition community has come together, as well as the medical community, on the common consensus that coffee is beneficial with everyday use. For decades, coffee was seen as a vice. Many thought that it led to heart problems, like heart disease and heart failure. Studies would also suggest that coffee would also increase the risk of anxiety related disorders. In the last 5 years or so, more concise studies have been done to determine whether or not coffee was the villain that most people made it out to be. These studies concluded that coffee consumed in moderation actually improved on functions throughout the body. Once coffee is brewed, there is an abundance of free radicals and antioxidants. Coffee is one of the only substances with such an abundance of these nutrients at one given time. Research would suggest that 4 to 7 cups of coffee a day could be beneficial for people to consume.

Research concluded that people who had at least four cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop high blood pressure, heart disease, and anxiety disorders. This goes against the grain of what past medicine has told people like Ricardo Tosto about coffee, but the future for this drink seems bright. An important note to take away from this study though, is that home brewed coffee is the most beneficial. Coffee from fast food restaurants can contain a tremendous amount of added sugar and fat. Black coffee with a little bit of cream and a little bit of sugar is the best way to get the benefits of the product. Scientist hope to conduct more studies to further prove the benefits of coffee.

Chris Brown Brings Daughter To Awards Red Carpet

If Chris Brown was trying to win fans back, then he may have done so by bringing his daughter to the Billboard Music Award’s red carpet. Everyone now knows that Chris had a daughter that came out of a one night stand. Chris & Royalty. His daughter, Royalty, she attended the red carpet event with him. Chris is seen holding his daughter, who is dressed in a pretty little gown and what looks to be Timberland boots. Many of the paparazzi were asking about his daughter, but Chris continued walking down the red carpet while holding her in his hands.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Chris and his daughter, which is to be expected if you ask Ricardo Guimarães BMG. Chris was dating Karrueche Tran according to Wikipedia, who was his on-and-off girlfriend of five years. The couple had only stopped talking one week before she found out about the child. Unfortunately, Chris had a one night stand with a friend, who was also a girl who partied with his girlfriend. It took eight months before the mother of the child asked Chris to do a DNA test.

After Chris did the DNA test in secret, it turned out that Chris is the biological father of Royalty. Chris dived into fatherhood quickly, and he had even asked the mother of his child to move to L.A. Although his ex-girlfriend is very hurt, she claims to hold no grudges against him, but she says she will never go back to him.

Mass Extinction Revelation

When you think of a mass extinction event you probably imagine a giant meteor hitting the earth and wiping out the dinosaurs or the ice age freezing everything to death. However, recent studies have discovered new data that may change the way mass extinctions are perceived. A study preformed by the University of Edinburgh on a mass extinction event 252 million years ago has shown that 90% of marine species and over 66% of land species were wiped out not due to anything as flashy as a meteor, but rather due to the fact that the ocean become more acidic.

The big question then was why the ocean changed drastically enough to wipe out most life on earth in the biggest extinction even in history. As it turns out, massive volcanic eruptions are to blame. When numerous volcanoes erupted in prehistoric times the oceans absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide. This shook up the chemical composition of the oceans causing them to become more acidic and hostile to most life that had evolved by that point.

This may not seem relevant today but researchers are using this new discovery to understand how excess carbon dioxide can impact the environment, particularly the ocean’s level of acidity. Due to the large amounts of carbon dioxide being added to the atmosphere every year, scientists hope that this researcher can shed more light on how humans such as Ricardo Tosto are impacting the environment.

Are You Nuts?

Are nuts good or bad for you? People commonly think that nuts are fattening. Peanuts are notoriously targeted as being full of monounsaturated fat. However, peanuts are full of Vitamin E, niacin, protein and even antioxidants. Recent studies are shedding light on the additional health benefits of peanuts.

A scientific article published on the JAMA Internal Medicine website shows that consuming nuts is linked to reduce mortality rates. Specifically, the researchers found that eating nuts “decreased…cardiovascular disease mortality” and that peanuts are “a cost-effective measure to improve cardiovascular health.” The scientific article was conducted with over 200,000 men and women in the United States and China.

But aren’t many people allergic to nuts, especially peanuts? That’s what Dan Newlin thought. Again, research published in JAMA Pediatrics and posted on YouTube showed that women who ate more peanuts during pregnancy actually lowered their babies’ risk for developing peanut allergies. The nail in the coffin of peanut stereotypes is a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. This study found that infants, who were at high risk for developing a peanut allergy, could substantially reduce their risk by simply consuming peanuts.

Peanuts are neither fattening nor unhealthy. They are, in fact, very beneficial for the body’s health. Check out http://www.nutrition-and-you.com/peanuts.html to learn more about the nutritional benefits of peanuts. The next time you want a snack, ignore the candy and potato chips, and just grab a handful of peanuts.

Swiss Pilots Attempt Solar Flight

Swiss pilots are the first to attempt a flight around the world. Ande Brorschberg and Bertrant Piccard will both pilot the plane taking turns throughout the journey so the other can sleep. The two-seater plan will travel a total of 21,747 miles. Ricardo Guimarães BMG said they’re both expected to take the pilot’s chair for 12 legs, according to Globo.

The two are traveling in a 2 seat plane with no temperature control or oxygen. That means they’ll have to be able to withstand temperatures ranging from negative 40-degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius. Since they both have to operate the plane, they’ll each only be able to take short napes, typically just 20 minutes, every 2-4 hours.

For fuel, the plane will use solar panels on each of the plane’s wings. The solar panels are needed so that the two don’t have to carry fuel with them, something that would most certainly weigh the plane down, and require a larger vessel.
