Events Highlight Sexual Violence

Anyone can be a victim of sexual violence. This is not only an American problem. It is also a worldwide problem. April is Sexual Violence awareness month. The Women’s Freedom Center has planned several events throughout the month of April in various places in order to raise awareness about sexual violence.

Shari is one of the women who works at the Women’s Freedom Center. She stated that rape culture is prevalent throughout the world, and many women are blamed for being sexually-assaulted. She also stated that sexual violence is glorified in the media. Many people are comfortable hearing rape jokes and laughing at them.

Shari also stated that sexism is prevalent. The first event will be held at the Brattleboro Museum. Tim Collins, who is an educator and activist, is one of the people who will be speaking at the event. He will also be performing a script with three other men. They will be doing a script about sexual assault.

Shari is saddened by the fact that victims are often questioned. Many victims are often asked what they could have done to prevent this. However, robbery victims are never asked about what they could have done to prevent themselves from getting robbed. Shari stated that sexual assault is a crime of an opportunity. Anyone can be a victim of sexual assault regardless of where they are at.

It is estimated that 80 percent of people who are sexually-assault knew the attacker. The Woman’s Freedom Center works with women, men and trans people. People who come to the Women’s Freedom Center can get a emergency housing and transportation. People who are intrested in getting help from the Women’s Freedom Center can call 802-254-6974 or 802-885-2050. You can also find information on the company’s website or Facebook page. Indiana Lawmakers Decide On Whether Convenience Stores Can Sell Beer

For years, only liquor stores in Indiana were able to sell cold, carryout beer to customers. Small convenience stores were limited to keeping only warm beer on their shelves, until some people started thinking creatively.

Jay Ricker, head of the family-owned chain of Ricker’s stores, started to include small, fast-food style restaurants in his convenience stores. These restaurants served Tex-Mex food like burritos and nachos to customers who were either coming in exclusively for the food or ordering a dish in conjunction with picking up other items from the store. Ricker’s has tables located within their stores, and they provide a limited table-side service.

A few weeks ago, Ricker’s applied for a liquor license and were approved. They began selling cold beer, as long as it was delivered straight to the customer sitting at a table. People were free to drink their beer at their tables or bring it home or to a different location with them. So far, it’s been met with positive reviews from most customers.

However, certain lawmakers were not happy with this development, since Ricker’s is really a convenience store more than a restaurant.

Debates were held before legislators voted on whether to continue to allow these type of alcohol sales. They discussed whether they should reword the law to prohibit convenience stores (with restaurants inside them) from selling cold beer for carryout purposes. During this time, Ricker’s brought a food truck to the capitol building to show just how serious they are about their restaurant side of business.

The latest vote directed the legislators to clarify the policy for selling cold beer for carryout customers. Until that is cleared up, anyone with an existing alcohol permit can continue to go about their business. However, when those permits are up, they would have to reapply. Because the liquor store lobby is more powerful than that of the convenience stores, many believe that the laws will be tightened up.

How Joint Revision and Arthroscopy Are Done

An orthopedic surgeon can perform a variety of procedures depending on the musculoskeletal problem a patient has. Two common orthopedic procedures are joint revision surgery and arthroscopy.

Joint Revision Surgery

Joint revision surgery is done to repair an artificial joint that may have been damaged after a long time due to normal wear and tear or even infection. The patient is put on either local or general anesthesia depending on the length of the procedure. The surgeon will either replace the artificial joint or adjust it so that it fits well to ease discomfort.

Arthroscopy

This is a short procedure that can take anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours. A small incision is made over the affected joint and an arthroscope is inserted into the joint. Using a video screen or an eyepiece, the surgeon will be able to view the inside of the joint and determine what the problem is. He/she can then make another incision through which fine surgical equipment can be inserted to correct the problem.

Greg Finch, the Expert Spine Surgeon

There are many great orthopedic surgeons in Australia who can perform the above procedures and more, but Greg Finch is by far the best of them all. Greg is an expert orthopedic surgeon based in Douglas, Australia. He specializes in issues affecting the spine and has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating such issues.

Besides Australia where he currently practices, he has worked in the U.S., Germany and the U.K. as well. Greg is known for his excellent services, and he is one of the most highly referred spine surgeons in Australia. He is a member of a number of associations that deal with issues to do with spine health including the North American Spine Society, the Spine Society of Australia, and the Australian Orthopedic Association.

Conclusion

The role that orthopedic surgeons play is a very important one. Without them, many people would have to live in excruciating pain or survive on heavy doses of painkillers for the rest of their lives. Nevertheless, thanks to experts like Greg Finch, people do not have to go through such suffering.

Indiana Senate Submits Proposed Two-Year Budget

The Indiana Senate on Thursday put forth a 32.1 billion, two-year state budget which now must be reconciled with the House’s budget proposal. Several week ago, the Indiana House forwarded a $31.7 billion budget proposal sponsored by Republicans. At present Senate and House priorities are not in alignment. The House version was about 700 million more than the previous year’s budget. The Senate wishes to increase spending almost a half billion dollars more. How to fund the budget and the specifics of the spending, especially as it relates to education and taxes, will have to be worked out before the bill is sent to Republican Governor Eric Holcomb.

In regards to funding priorities, the Senate calls for higher spending for K-12 education and state colleges. The Senate would increase spending by $85 million for K-12 and $76 million more for state colleges than called for by the House. The Senate’s school funding also gives more to high-need students. It allots money to districts on a per student basis and lets schools spend money based on how they themselves rate teachers. The only place where the Senate spends less on K-12 education is that they omitted a House proposal for a one-time $500 per pupil grant given to schools that choose to consolidate.

The biggest difference between the two plans is expenditure on pre-kindergarten programs. The House proposed a $10 million expansion to the $437 million now spent on pre-K, while the Senate budgeted on three $3 million, plus an additional million for a new online pre-K program.

Whatever the two houses decide to spend, agreement must be reached as to funding measures for the budget. The House plan proposes a $1 per pack increase in the cigarette tax. This is part of House’s plan to double the sales tax on gasoline and dedicate the entire amount to fund the state’s transportation budget. The shift leaves just under a $300 million hole in the general fund, which will be filled by the cigarette tax. The Senate plan does not call for any cigarette tax increase, reserving such increase for a possible cut in Federal subsidies for Medicaid. The Senate plan would double the gasoline tax but use part of it to fund increase spending in the general budget.

Unwanted Babies Will be a bit Safer if Indiana’s Baby Box Bill Passes

Europe and Asia allow parents to put unwanted newborns into “baby boxes,” and Indiana just introduced a bill to follow in their footsteps.

The bill is not law yet, but it is making its way through the legislative process. Baby boxes are safe containers or incubators for parents who want to surrender their newborns. There are many laws that protect parents from being persecuted for abandoning their newborns. Parents could leave children at police stations, hospitals, and many nonprofit organizations that deal with these types of situations.

The problem is that newborns are sometimes left without proper clothes or are sometimes exposed to things like increment weather. There is no telling how long it might take for someone to notice the baby, which worries some people. Baby boxes could help ensure that the baby is safe and comfortable until he or she is discovered.

It is easy to see why many lawmakers are worried about children being left out in the elements. An infant’s immune system is not strong, meaning sicknesses could be quite taxing on their little bodies. There is also the possibility of wildlife hurting the infant as he or she waits.

The Save the Abandoned Babies Foundation in Chicago said they have accounted for 1,400 illegally abandoned babies, which puts the babies in danger.

Indiana is attempting to create different prototypes for these safe baby boxes. Some come with a warming and cooling mechanism to ensure the child’s comfort. A baby’s body does not regulate its own temperature well like adults, making this a very important feature. The people designing the box also want to install a switch that alerts the drop off center about a child being left in one of their safe boxes to ensure that the baby does not wait too long to be cared for. The specifics of the design are not set in stone just yet, but it seems that a lot of ideas are being tossed around.

It certainly makes it easier for parents to leave unwanted newborns in the care of others without feeling anxious about their safety.

Rona Borre Uses Common Sense and Hard Work

Rona Borre believes in working hard, but she also believes that working smart is the ultimate knife in the heart of failure. When Borre started her new venture Instant Alliance, a staffing company, in 2001, she made the decision to specialize.

Her company which was started in the spare bedroom of her Chicago condo now occupies a suite of offices in downtown Chicago on Adams Street. Instant Alliance bills out millions of dollars of fees annually and is now one of the fastest-growing woman-owned businesses in the United States, see http://www.instantalliance.com/.

Borre and her highly-trained unit of account executives specialize in the hiring of professionals in the financial and technology fields to be placed in Fortune 500 firms, mid-sized companies, and smaller companies who are growing. These particular types of hires are just what companies need to stay competitive and grow, and they will always be in demand. Click here.

As opposed to many competitors who attempt to quickly sift through mountains of resumes, Borre, and her team spend a seemingly large amount of time and effort in getting to know the executives of the hiring group of their client companies. This tactic allows the information to flow as it can in no other way so that the right candidate can be found and placed appropriately. For more news, check cnbc.com.

The results speak loud and clear as clients overwhelmingly applaud Borre and the efforts of all hands when it comes to getting the desired results.

Vice-President’s Matrimonial Vows Cause Uproar

The March 28th edition of the Washington Post did a profile on the Second Lady in its politics section called, “Karen Pence is the vice president’s ‘prayer warrior,’ gut check and shield.” Karen Pence declined to be interviewed for the article and the piece relied heavily on previous articles. In what many ways seem to be a rather innocuous fluff piece, the Post included this factoid “In 2002, Mike Pence told the Hill that he never eats alone with a woman other than his wife and that he won’t attend events featuring alcohol without her by his side, either.” The Hill article does not show any reference to the VP stating that he never ate alone with women without his wife. The actual quote found in the article was “‘If there’s alcohol being served and people are being loose, I want to have the best-looking brunette in the room standing next to me,’

However, while Vice-President Pence made the comments over 15 years ago, it reappearance in the Washington Post article has resulted in an social media firestorm and a new front to the culture wars fought on the battlefield of social media. Within a day, even the Washington Post was doing stories about its own story with in-depth analysis such as “Pence’s unwillingness to be alone with a woman is a symptom of a bigger problem.” Publications such as the Atlantic attempted to connect Pence’s comments with what they labeled the “Billy Graham Rule” and label it as sexist, while Slate writer, Heather Schwedel, implied that Pence didn’t respect women as well as ridiculing his wife for being a “prayer warrior.” The onslaught of criticism of Pence brought its own wave of ridicule from the right in the press. The Daily Wire compared the Pence’s with President Clinton quipping, “Pence Will Only Eat Alone With His Wife. As Opposed To Clinton, Who Would Only Eat Alone With Any Woman Who Wasn’t.”

Indiana University Names Archie Miller Men’s Basketball Coach

On March 16th, Coach Tom Crean was fired after nine years as the head coach of the Indiana University men’s basketball coach. Nine days later, IU Athletic Director Fred Glass, named his replacement, Archie Miller, former head basketball coach for the Dayton University. Miller signed a seven-year contract in the range of $3.35 million per year.

Glass introduced the new head coach during a press conference on Monday. Glass was tight lipped about the process only saying the he was thrilled about the hire and that Miller was the only person he met face-to-face with. “I think the most important thing about any search is who you end up hiring, and I’m thrilled with the coach that we hired,” said Glass.

Miller, who is only 38, compiled a 139-63 record at Dayton during his six seasons as a head coach, his first such position. He had a winning season every year and advanced the Flyers to the last four NCAA tournaments. IU’s new head coach’s older brother is Sean Miller, the head coach at the University of Arizona.

After being introduced to the assembly, the new head coach took time to describe his vision for the program. The new coach indicated that Hoosier would play up tempo style of play that stresses half-court defense and physicality.

Miller said his first priority will be to complete his coaching staff. Beyond that, he has to determine his lineup for next year. The Hoosier have three players, Thomas Bryant, OG Anunoby and James Blackmon Jr., that could potentially leave early for the NBA draft. Moreover, two members of Indiana’s recruiting class, Al Durham and Clifton Moore, asked IU for a release from their national letter of intent after Crean’s firing. Miller has contacted the 2017 signees in an effort to keep them at IU. The team received some good news on Thursday when Collin Hartman from Indianapolis Cathedral, who sat out last season due to an injury, announced that he will be coming back to IU for his final season.
